I was born in Hong Kong and brought up in Singapore and London. After my undergraduate degree at Oxford, where I specialised in Irish poetry, I trained and practised as a lawyer in the field of financial services regulation.
During this time, I maintained my research interests through private study. A year after qualifying, I decided to return to academia with a master's degree and doctorate at Queen's University Belfast, which was funded by UK Research and Innovation (the Arts and Humanities Research Council).
Throughout the period of carrying out my research, I made extensive efforts to gain experience of teaching a wide variety of age groups, beginning by teaching sixth formers as part of the university's widening participation programme and volunteering with two KS2 Forest Schools. From here, I then provided after-school enrichment classes at three institutions and taught full-time for four months at an independent (GDST) school. I have also taught undergraduates, both within the university and at its annual Irish Studies Summer School, and delivered lectures to audiences of academics and the general public.
