Embark on a journey to improve analytical and critical writing. Students are taken step-by-step through the principles of reading, writing and understanding non-fiction texts.
Students will be guided through the fundamentals of reading, understanding and writing non-fiction texts. They will explore the importance of audience, purpose, tone, register, style and form. The course will cover non-fiction text types such as articles, speeches, reports, leaflets and letters. Students will learn how to read and analyse language in non-fiction texts, critiquing choices of the language used in various models, spanning an array of interesting topics. The course will teach students how to draw comparisons between non-fiction texts, and the themes to compare within a text (writers' perspectives, stylistic features, vocabulary, tone, context). Students will use this knowledge to craft non-fiction texts of their own, starting by learning the basics of persuasive writing, and they will learn the conventions for each text type, producing a number of their own. They will then be taught how to structure their writing, including paragraph construction. During the course, students will propose their 'subject of passion,' use homework time to research it and lesson time discussing it (debates are encouraged for group learning sessions). In doing so, students will be able to write about areas of interest, whilst learning the importance of writing with passion and purpose. Through this, students will practise oracy and expression.
